With the hope of warm spring weather still a few weeks away, I wanted to create a modern DIY Wall Hanging Planter to brighten up my home office and add a little (more) greenery to the space. This modern look is a great addition to any empty vertical space and will hold gardening fans over until the weather warms up and we can head outside.
Note: This is an intermediate DIY project. Please be careful when handling tools and hardware. And always wear your safety goggles!
Step 1: Gather your materials
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4-inch terra cotta pot
- 1 x 8 wood plank
- Green vinyl-coated wire (you can customize and get creative with this!)
- Sandpaper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Measuring tape
- Planter bracket
- Your favorite hanging plant
Here are the tools you’ll be using:
- Drill
- Jigsaw
- Circular saw
Step 2: Measure
Note: You can customize these measurements to your plant size, pot size and preference.
Measure a square on the end of your 1 x 8 plank. Since I used a 4-inch terra cotta pot, I wanted my square to be about 1 1/2 inches around the sides of the pot. That equals a square of 6 1/2 inches. I used a 1 x 8 wood plank because it’s easy to maneuver and is close to my final size. The less cuts the better!
Find the center point of the square and measure out an equal distance on each side. I measured 2 inches out from all sides of the center point.
Tip: The easiest way to draw a circle in this step would be to use a protractor, but I didn’t have one on hand. So I marked the 2-inch measurement every inch or so around the circle and then carefully free handed my circle.
Find the four corner points, which will hold the vinyl-coated wire. I measured 1/2 inch from each side.
Step 3: Make your cuts
Drill a hole in the center, any size. It just needs to comfortably fit the jigsaw blade.
Use a jigsaw to cut the circle out of the center. Sand down the area.
Drill the four corner holes.
Tips: Remember to use a small drill bit — a size as close as possible to the size of your vinyl-coated wire — for the corner holes. Also, do these steps while your square is still attached to the 1 x 8 plank for extra stability.
Then, use a circular saw to cut the square off the 1 x 8 plank.
Step 4: Set it up
Get your potted plant ready and make sure the terra cotta pot fits snuggly in the hole. Measure how long you’ll want the planter to hang and thread the vinyl-coated wire through the holes, tying a knot underneath each corner of the wood. I used two strands, strung on opposite corners of the wood and tied underneath.
Step 5: Hang it on the wall and admire your handiwork
Attach your planter bracket (as shown in the first image) to the wall, pat yourself on the back and hang your beautiful, DIY Wall Hanging Planter! I actually made a custom bracket with scrap wood and painted it the color of the wall. Remember, you can customize your planter however you like. Paint the wood, use a different color wire or rope — get creative and enjoy!
Tip: When watering your plant, just remove the pot and place it on a plate or paper towel. Most terra cotta pots have holes in the bottom for drainage; you wouldn’t want water dripping out on your furniture.
